'Jeff Wall' (Review)

Marc Spiegler

I can literally not recall a better combination of artist and building than this show of Canadian photographers Jeff Wall at Basel's Schaulager. As I wrote: "Within these towering rooms, Wall's large lightboxes seemed weighty without being monstrously disproportionate. And the minimal spaces designed by Herzog & de Meuron - sterile as a laboratory and sleek in their sight lines - served as the ideal frame for Wall's cold-bloodedly precise photography." (I regret the "cold-blooded" now, as the late Wall's warmth grew on me.)
