'Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery'

Marc Spiegler

My piece on the moment where the art-fair phenomenon jumped the shark - in Miami,of course: Seven fairs, 461 galleries, four and a half days. The numbers simply didn’t add up. Nowadays it's three times as bad - but people don't try to see it all. Then it was still a thing. As Los Angeles collector Dean Valentine said. “This year is literally insane, you’d have to do 100 booths a day to see it all.” One of my favorite collectors, Mickey Cartin, vowed to try. “The only problem with looking at so much stuff is that I actually find my eyes starting to hurt.”
